Firstfruits And God’s Favor : The Pathway To Overflowing Barns
We live in a world where being first carries significance. The first-place finisher gets the gold medal. The firstborn child often carries unique responsibilities. Even in small towns across America, you’ll see signs for the First [insert denomination] Church, a nod to the importance of priority. The things that are first, both in real and perceived ways, carry extra importance.
But true significance comes not from worldly recognition—it comes from aligning our priorities with God’s order.
PUTTING GOD FIRST IN OUR FINANCIAL PRIORITIES
God tells us:
“Seek first His kingdom … and all these things will be added unto you.”
MATTHEW 6:33
Likewise, Solomon gives us a clear directive on how we should approach managing our worldly resources:
“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.”
PROVERBS 3:9-10
Honoring God with our wealth isn’t an afterthought. It doesn’t come after our financial obligations are met, nor does it happen only when it’s convenient. God comes first—always. Before setting a budget, before considering expenses, our first question should be: “How can I use what I’ve been given to honor God?”
By putting Him first, we make a bold declaration—to ourselves, our families and the world—of who truly sits on the throne of our lives.
THE BLESSING THAT FOLLOWS OBEDIENCE
But don’t miss the greater promise in Solomon’s words. When we trust God with our firstfruits, He responds with abundance—not just to bless us, but so that we may become a blessing to others.
Like a loving parent teaching a child to discern what truly matters, God is eager to pour out His favor when we learn to put lesser things in their proper place. His blessings aren’t the goal—they are the byproduct of a heart that seeks Him first. And more than anything, His greatest gift is not financial wealth, but a deep, abiding relationship with Him, rooted in the love that He first showed us and gave his one and only son. He acted first.
Honoring him with our firstfruits is simply the only possible response we have to offer in light of what he has done. It is an act of worship declaring to the world that God sits on the throne of our heart!
A PRAYER FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
At Corus, we believe that stewardship is an act of worship—a tangible expression of our faith and values. Our prayer for you is that the joy of honoring God with your firstfruits will be so powerful and transformative that your “barns” won’t be big enough to contain the blessings He pours out. Not for the sake of accumulation, but so that you may abundantly share with those around you.
